A FINELY CARVED WHITE AND DARK GREY JADE LOTUS LEAF-FORM BRUSH WASHER
17TH/18TH CENTURY
The deep vessel is naturalistically carved as a large open lotus leaf borne on a stem that issues from the center of the base and is tied together with a ribbon at one end with further stems that bear a lotus flower, a smaller lotus leaf and grasses, which extend around the sides and up towards the rim where two magpies, highlighted by the grey areas of the stone, sit on opposite sides, the larger bird near a small spider similarly highlighted by the grey color. The luminous, white stone has areas of shaded grey color and some small areas of added russet color, and is finely polished.
