TWO WHITE JADE SHAPED RECTANGULAR PENDANT PLAQUES
18TH/19TH CENTURY
One, of pale greenish-white color, is carved on one side with a figure in a sampan in a river landscape, and on the reverse with a seven-character inscription, xiao zhou gui qu dao cun jia (the little boat returns to the village), followed by a seal, wen wan (play thing), all below confronted archaistic dragons amidst clouds above. The other is carved in low relief on one side with a soldier carrying a spear, and on the reverse with a lengthy poem, da yi bian guo zei/wu qin Zhao Shunping/ning xu fa xiao zhi/fang ke zhi dong zheng/Zhao Shunping hou, below addorsed archaistic dragon scroll above. There is some faint russet mottling in the white stone at the top.

Lot Essay

The poem on the second plaque may be translated, 'Zhao Shunping righteously identified the enemy. Fa Xiaozhi would have stopped the Eastern Expedition. Zhao Shunping hou (Marquis Zhao Shunping).' The passage is taken from a poem on the Three Kingdoms by the Qing-dynasty scholar Wang Shizhen (1634-1711).
