Lot Essay

Japanese graphic designer Hiroshi Ohchi trained at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts before the Second World War, before working freelance as a designer on commercial campaigns and delivering a huge body of work for various institutions. As well as becoming the first art director of Idea magazine, he taught graphic design and wrote thirty three books on the subject (A.G.I., Hiroshi Olchi).

The cropped composition of the pair of arms stretching into the frame reflects traditional Japanese printing techniques where images are cut off for greater visual immediacy.
