IN THE STYLE OF ABU TALIB AL-MUDARRIS, QAJAR IRAN, CIRCA 1860
On plain base, the painted decoration with grisaille of leaves of clouds all over (abr-o bad), the borders with cusped medallions filled in with oblique sinuous lines on green and red ground, the hinged cover opening to reveal one compartment later fitted with embroidered silk, with chain on each sides and lock, key lacking

Abu Talib was a maker and painter of pen boxes with a particular style known as abr-o bad ('clouds and wind'), which he is credited to have invented.

A very similar casket, decorated with similar marbled patterns and signed Abu Talib al-Mudarris, dated AH 1278-1861-62 AD sold at Christie's South Kensington, 29 April 2005, lot 473. An elegant pen box also signed by this master sold (after sale) at Christie's South Kensington, 27 April 2012, lot 969.
