Lot Essay

This is identified as the image of the four cupolas of the tomb of the Eighth Imam in Mashhad.

The Persian verses are invocations to 'Ali and the Eighth Imam. Another inscription indicates that it was made during the reign of Muzaffar al-Din Shah in 1314 (1896-7 AD).

It is signed as 'The work of Muhammad Ja'far Shirazi'.

M.A. Karimzadeh Tabrizi refers to this piece in The Lives and Art of Old Painters of Iran, vol. 2, London, 1990, p. 680.
