BENEDETTO BORDONE (1460-1531).
Isolario... Nel qual si ragiona de tutte l'Isole del mondo... Con la gionta del Monte del Oro nuouamente ritrouato. Venice: [Francesco di Leno, c.1565?]. 2° (310 x 210mm). Title within large woodcut border, 3 full-page woodcuts, 3 double-page woodcut maps, 101 woodcut illustrations of which 4 double-page, and woodcut initials. (Lacking B1, B6, F2 with half map of Venice and F8, waterstaining and soiling, some edges torn, a few maps reinforced with guards, some tiny holes.) Contemporary limp vellum, original ties, small shelf mark label on cover (somewhat worn). Provenance: Resid. Venet. Soc. J (book label on title) -- Compagnia del Gesú, Rome (book label).
A later edition of Bordone's Isolario first printed in 1528 in Venice. Bordone was a Paduan miniaturist trained as an illuminator; the simple outline woodcuts, enlivened by hills and trees, are in the style of Bartolommeo dalli Sonetti's 1485 Isolario, an atlas of the Aegean archipelego and the earliest of a series of printed 15th- and 16th-century Italian isolarios. The oval world map (Shirley 59), one of the first to use an oval projection, shows the New World, captioned 'terra del laboratore' and 'mo[n]do novo'; the other maps relating to the Americas are principally devoted to the Caribbean and include Jamaica, Cuba and Guadalupe. Adams B-2485 (earlier editions); Alden 547.2; Church I, 86; Harvard/Mortimer Italian, 82 (1534 edition); Phillips 164; Sabin 6421; The World Encompassed 83 (1528 edition).
