JOHN WILLIAM NORIE (1772-1843)

The Complete British Coasting Pilot. London: by the author, 1820. 2° (650 x 430mm). 14 charts, comprised of 23 double-page engraved maps, 3 of which folding, by J. Stephenson after William Heather and J.W. Norrie, corrected and revised by J.W. Norrie, all mounted on guards. (4 maps with short tears or small holes, soiling and fraying throughout, a few maps trimmed closed to edge just touching imprint.) Contemporary calf-backed boards (very worn, lacking spine).

AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDERD ISSUE of Norie's famous series of maritime charts. Hydrographer and writer on navigation, Norrie published his first work in 1796 with William Heather. By early 1797 he was drawing charts for Heather and teaching navigation before buying Heather's business in 1813. 'Norie's charts and books, particularly the Tables and Epitome, made his name well known for nearly two centuries' (ODNB).
