Lot Essay

The graffito on the base is similar to that found on a number of other oinochoi and amphorae, sometimes with an associated numeral. It has been suggested that it could be a pictogram for a vase-name, cf. A. W. Johnston, Trademarks on Greek Vases, Warminster, 1979, pp. 122-123, 207, fig. 9D.
