A LARGE BAMBOO CARVING OF A RAFT
18TH CENTURY
The raft is carved and pierced to one side with the Eight Daoist Immortals, the Three Star Gods, and attendants. The other side depicts groups of scholars at various leisurely pursuits. The raft is formed from a large gnarled pine tree trunk with a canopy of leafy branches. The base bears an eight-character inscription.

Lot Essay

The inscription to the base reads 'She xian shi lu shan ren xi zuo', which may be translated as 'made by the Scholar of Rocks and Deer from She county in Anhui province'. The 'Scholar of Rocks and Deer' is the pseudonym for Li Xiqiao, a famous carver active in the Qing period.
