oval, 3 in. (76 mm.) high, gilt-metal frame, engraved on the reverse 'Prince / Charles Edward / the young Pretender / B. 1720. D.1788. / By Rosalba'
inscribed in ink on the reverse 'Rosalba'

Lot Essay

This sitter was previously thought to be Charles Edward Stuart (1720-1788), The Young Pretender, however the absence of the sash or breast-star of the Order of the Garter, and the different facial features of the sitter compared to accepted portraits of Charles Edward Stuart make this unlikely.
