A GREEK POTTERY TANKARD
ATTIC, LATE GEOMETRIC IIB-IIA, CIRCA 750-725 B.C.
With a squat globular body and a wide flaring mouth, the high arching strap handle joined to the shoulders and the rim, the decorative scheme symmetrically arranged in brown slip, in two registers, the upper register with three panels, the central with a stag in profile, rosettes in the field, flanked on either side by a panel with a quatrefoil, double rows of chevron in between, the lower register with four panels, the two central with stags similarly rendered, quatrefoils in the two outer panels, a row of dots above, thin horizontal bands above and below, concentric bands on the interior of the rim, horizontal bands on the handle
