4 volumes, 2° (442 x 282mm). Engraved title vignettes in vols. I-II, headpieces and text-illustrations, wood-engraved devices to titles of vols. III-IV, head- and tailpieces and text-illustrations. 501 engraved plates on 522 sheets (numbered 1-226, 226[bis], 227-8, unnumbered plate [228 bis], 229-267 [plates 268 and 269 on one leaf], 270-499 [plates 331,448, 452, 453, 457, 458, 467, 477, 479, 483, 484, 487, 488, 489, and 490 on 2 sheets, plate 486 on 3 sheets, plate 466 on 6 sheets], very many folding. (Some browning and staining, leaves b1-2 and plates 483-488 in vol IV misbound.) Contemporary half vellum over marbled paper-covered boards, uncut (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Emily, Marchioness of Lansdowne (1819-1895; pencil signature to titles, engraved armorial bookplate).
A FINE UNSOPHISTICATED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. The complete work was planned to comprise 1200 plates in 8 volumes, but only these four volumes were published. It was issued on both large and normal paper stocks, with some variation in the placing of the plates. Berlin Kat 2510; Brunet I, 977; Cohen-de Ricci p.157.
