Lot Essay

The white magnolia (Magnolia denudata) is known as yulan, 'jade orchid' or baiyulan, 'white jade orchid'. The flower is symbolic of purity and its name is often used as a pun on jade such as yutang which means a rich and noble house. The present vase with the addition of the peony, a flower long associated with wealth and honour, forms the homophone, yutang fugui, 'May your noble house be blessed with wealth and honour'.
