The famous Parisian firm of Denière (see lot 46) ceased trading in 1903 after which six Ventes Denière were held to disperse the firm's considerable stock of objets d'art, bronze castings and master models. François Linke bought extensively at these sales: everything from classical sculpture patterns after Clodion and Bologna to garnitures de chiminée for which Denière was best known. Acquisitions included the 'Grand Pendule, sujet Neptune, style Louis XIV' and the 'pendule à cage' - see Christie's, London, 20 September 2012, lot 230 (for an example of this clock by Denière) and Christie's, London, 23 September 2010, lot 347 (for one by Linke). It is therefore probable that Linke bought this pair of candelabra from one of the Denière sales: signed as they are by both 'DENIÈRE' and 'Linke' (C. Payne, François Linke, 1855-1946, The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, Woodbridge, 2003, pp. 340-2).
