A LARGE PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF A GUARDIAN
LATE MING DYNASTY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY
The figure is carved in a dynamic pose, with his arms swinging as he strides on the square pedestal base. He wears elaborately detailed armor with dragon epaulets, and a billowing celestial scarf. His face has a fierce expression below his animal-mask helmet. There are traces of white, red, and green pigments.

Compare the related painted wood figure of a guardian, of comparable size, and Ming date, shown wearing elaborate armor and depicted in an animated pose illustrated in Fojiao Diaosu Mingpin Tulu, Beijing, 1997, p. 567, no. 544.
