A WHITE JADE-MOUNTED GILT-METAL BELT FITTING
JADE PLAQUE, MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
The rectangular fitting is inset with a white jade plaque carved in openwork with a chilong slithering amidst scrolling lingzhi stems within an integral border of concave beads, and the gilt-metal mount has engraved decoration and attachment loops on the reverse. Together with a jade-inset gilt-metal belt buckle, circa 1700, a white jade oblong plaque carved in openwork with a coiled dragon is in the center and pale green jadeite cabochons are at the ends of the gilt-metal buckle, which has a loop and a hook on the engraved reverse.

Lot Essay

The white jade, openwork dragon plaque of the first fitting is similar to one in the British Museum, illustrated by J. Rawson in Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, p. 342, no. 25:23, where it is dated 16th century.
