A PALE GREENISH-WHITE JADE ARCHAISTIC 'PHOENIX' RHYTON
18TH CENTURY
The well-hollowed vessel rises from the back of a phoenix to an incised key-fret band that encircles the rim. The feet of the seated phoenix form the base, and the neck curves gracefully back on one side so that the head faces the long, openwork tail feathers that sweep up to the spout. The softly polished stone has some opaque white mottling and areas of added russet color.
5 in. (12.8 cm.) high
Provenance
Private European collection, acquired in Hong Kong, ca. 1950s.
