With its highly distinctive bolster sides, this stool is clearly a variant on a rare Gillows model first shown in the firm's Estimate Sketch Books on 8 December 1848 (E.S.B. folio 5555) but probably in production rather earlier. The dimensions given in the Gillows sketch exactly match the present stool's, confirming Gillows as its maker.
