Lot Essay

The present lot is one of a small group of rugs woven in the Kazak region whose overall design of serrated polychrome lozenges appears to be the pre-cursor in design of the more commonly drawn Borjalou carpets with their broader hooked lozenge borders. The same field design and soft, lustrous wool is shared with a rug discussed by Peter Willborg in his book, Textile Treasures from five Countries, Skövde, 1995, pl.20, which he dates as having been woven between 1770-1840. A similar example noted as 18th century, is illustrated by Ulrich Schürmann, Caucasian Carpets, Munich, 1965, pp. 70-71, with perhaps the closest comparable in both colour and design illustrated in Hali 39, May/June 1988, p.58.
