Lot Essay

The central hooked lozenge medallion on this unusual square-format rug is very similar to those on a fragmentary Genje rug filled with the same Gothic tracery illustrated in Ulrich Schürmann, Caucasian Rugs, Munich, 1965, pl.44, pp.146-47, whilst the smaller secondary medallions resemble those in a Medallion carpet in the Turk ve Islam Eserleri Museum, Istanbul which was acquired from the Haghia Sophia, Istanbul in 1912, (Serare Yetkin, Early Caucasian Carpets in Turkey, Volume I, London, 1978, plate 101).
