SCHENK, Pieter (1660-1718). Haemisphaeriorum Tabula Carthesiana. Amsterdam, ca 1700.
Engraved double-hemisphere map of the world, outline colored by a contemporary hand, image 486 x 592 mm (535 x 633 mm sheet). Surmounted by north and south polar projections and diagrams of the solar system and the earth with zodiacal and astronomical planes, and contemporary fully colored richly decorated border engraved by Abraham Deur of mythological scenes, terrestrial and marine life. Verso blank. (Very minor darkening and a few tiny chips along edges.)
Very rare and beautifully decorated and colored map of the world. Peter Schenk, a pupil of Gerald Valck, went into partnership with him probably in 1672 and married his sister in 1687. They published their own maps and printed maps from Janssonius's and Visscher's plates. His world map was published in the Atlas Contractus ca. 1700 (see Koeman, Sche 1 and 2) and was probably also published separately. Shirley 438.
