TWO GILT TOPHANE POTTERY PIPES AND A PAIR OF TOPHANE POTTERY CUPS AND SAUCERS
CONSTANTINOPLE, OTTOMAN TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY
Each pipe with bamboo stem and gilt foliated decoration, the first with tubular furnace, the second with horn mouth piece, the furnace with gilt-copper (tombak) hinged open-work lid rising from a ribbed base, the first marked 'HOUSNY, CONSPLE', the second marked 'S. SEILER CONSPLE' and numbered '136', the cups on short straight foot , the rounded body engraved and gilt with a radiating foliated medallion containing the tughra of Sultan 'Abd al-Hamid II flanked with the crescent moon and arched panels with hanging palmettes, the rim with calligraphic bands, the saucers of indented rounded form with similar decoration
The larger pipe 21.1/4in. (54cm.) long ; each cup 2.1/2in. (6.5cm.) diam.
