A SILVER-GILT ICON OF THE BEHEADING OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
MARK OF DMITRI ANDREEV, ASSAYMASTER'S MARK OF DMITRI TVERSKOI, ST. PETERSBURG, CIRCA 1832-1850
Rectangular, the figures realistically painted, a saint holding a platter with the Baptist's decollated head, surrounded by Martyr Artemy, Martyr Glikeriya, and St. Peter Metropolitan of Moscow, beneath a figure of Christ, the Christ raising his right hand in benediction while his left hand wields a pen and rests on a globe, the oklad repoussé and chased with clouds and foliage and rock work within foliate and rocaille borders, applied with halos chased in a sunburst pattern, the reverse with indistinct inscription in pencil and numbered '1', with additional Russian inscription in ink 'Alexei Met[ropolitan] Mosc[ow]. Martyr Glikeriya/Martyr Artemy', marked on lower edge, date indistinct
