A TURQUOISE-GLAZED AND GILT-DECORATED 'ABSTINENCE' PLAQUE
19TH CENTURY
The plaque is decorated to one side with a central panel enclosing the characters zhai jie, surrounded by archaistic stylised scrolls decorated in gilt, reserved on a bright turquoise ground. The reverse is similarly decorated, but with the central panel containing the characters in Manchu.
2 ½ in. (6.3 cm.) long
