Lot Essay

The present tureen, cover and stand are from the service presented to the duc de Montmorency-Luxembourg by the city of Rouen to celebrate his appointment as the Governor of Normandy in 1728. See J. Giacomotti, French Faience, New York, 1963, p. 35. pl. 11 for another example of the stand, in the Musée des Beaux Arts at Rouen. Many of the pieces in the service have been identified by the signature 'Guillibeaux', as found on the reverse of the stand. This same form was also produced in Chinese export porcelain; for a famille verte example with the same eel finial, see Christie's, London, 11 May 2010, lot 284.
