CAVALLO, Tiberius (1749-1809). The History and Practice of Aerostation. London: for the author, 1785. 8° (208 x 130mm). 2 folding engraved plates. (Some browning in the first and last few leaves, plates with light soiling and light spotting.) Contemporary calf, red morocco spine label (extremities rubbed, joints starting, spine panel worn, without rear free endpaper). Provenance: St Andrews University (title inscription, cancelled shelf-marks, noted as duplicate).
FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TREATISE IN ENGLISH ON BALLOONING. Cavallo describes the early balloon experiments in France and in England, speculating on the scientific principles employed, and envisioning applications for the nascent science. Benjamin Franklin owned a copy of this book, which he later inscribed to Pierre Samuel Dupont (sold, Christie's New York, 19 May 2011, lot 176). When asked by a sceptical observer what practical use a hot-air balloon might have, Franklin famously responded 'what is the use of a new-born baby?'
