FIRST EDITION published, as the title states, in the 28th year of Queen Victoria's reign and sold for one shilling. The recently retired John Wisden created the almanac in order to promote the new brand of professional cricket. Although the first edition consisted of little more than a 'clump of scorecards' (Winder p. 32) , it offered direct competition to Frederick Lillywhite's Guide to Cricketers. The actual compiler of the first 16 editions was W. H. Knight. AN EXCELLENT COPY WITH FRESH, CLEAN PAGES THROUGHOUT.
