RAGLAN, FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron (1788-1855). --Life of Field-Marshal Lord Raglan: with a review of the military operations in the Crimea. London: W.H. Smith and Son, 1855. 8° (165 x 100 mm). (Light spotting.) Original red blind-stamped cloth, title gilt within laurel wreath to the upper cover, blue endpapers, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed, upper cover soiled), contained in the original red straight-grained morocco slipcase lettered in gilt to upper cover 'The Commander in Chief' (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Lord Raglan (2nd Baron, inscription to title dated 7 September 1855, and booklabel).
RAGLAN FAMILY COPY OF THE 1ST BARON'S OBITUARY. This is the first separately published edition in book form, offprinted from The United Service Magazine. There are two 1855 issues, one published (as here) by W.H. Smith and another by Ward Lock. No priority can be established, but both are rare. ONLY FOUR COPIES ON COPAC: British Library, Cambridge, NLS and Liverpool. The latter three copies are identified as 'second edition', but this probably indicates their offprint status only.
Together with: A Victorian plaster miniature model of Lord Raglan's memorial stone, mid-19th century, inscribed TO THE MEMORY OF FIELD MARSHAL LORD RAGLAN, G.C.B. COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN THE CRIMEA. DIED 28TH JUNE 1855, surmounted by a smaller tablet inscribed IN THIS ROOM DIED F.M. LORD RAGLAN etc.; and a Victorian cut-paper memorial to Lord Raglan with a poem; the headstone - 5¾ in. (14.5 cm.) high; 3 in. (7.5 cm.) wide, overall
