THE PERCUSSION PISTOLS EACH BY WESTLEY RICHARDS, CIRCA 1825-35, THE LAST UNSIGNED, EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The percussion pistols each with octagonal twist sighted barrel, engraved patent breech with platinum line and pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved tang and signed bolted lock, figured walnut full stock with chequered butt, engraved iron mounts, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and stirrup ramrod, Birmingham proof marks, the officer's pistol with silver escutcheon engraved with the initials 'CFS'(?), the travelling pistol serial no. 216, with some original browned and case-hardened finish on the underside of the barrel and breech, the lock with traces of original case-hardened finish, and silver escutcheon engraved 'R.S. from M'; the last with octagonal sighted barrel, lock with raised pan, walnut full stock, iron mounts, and original horn-tipped ramrod
The barrels 8 in. (20.3 cm.); 4 in. (10.2 cm.); and 9½ in. (24.1 cm.) respectively
Provenance
The presentation inscription on the escutcheon of the travelling pistol suggests that it was given to Richard Somerset, the future 2nd Baron Raglan, by his grandfather William Wellesley-Pole, Lord Maryborough and later 3rd Earl of Mornington (1763-1845), brother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852).
The other two possibly used by Lord FitzRoy Somerset, later 1st Baron Raglan (1788-1855).
