A SET OF FOUR VICTORIAN ELECTROPLATE-MOUNTED EBONISED WOOD BEAKERS
MID-19TH CENTURY
Of tapering form, with plated mounts and liner, the front of each further applied with cartouche engraved with reversed and interlaced initial 'L' beneath a marquess' coronet; together with a silver-mounted horn claret jug, mark of George Adams, London, 1877, the hinged cover engraved with presentation inscription, and a pair of beakers en suite, mark of Thomas Johnson, London, 1875, applied with a cartouche engraved with reversed and interlaced 'C' beneath viscount's coronet and dated July 16th 1876, the jug marked inside cover and near handle, the pair of beakers marked on rim
The set of four beakers, 5.1/2 in (14 cm.) high
The jug, 11.1/8 in. (28.3 cm.) high
The inscription on the jug reads, 'Beamish Agricultural Society Show, Chester-le-Street 1878. For the Best Clydesdale Brood Mare, won by "Countess" the property of the Marquess of Londonderry'.
