Lot Essay

The sitters depicted above were the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia, the Governor of Moscow and his wife, the Princess Elizabeth of Hesse by Rhine, later named Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, also known as ‘Ella’, the Grand Daughter of Queen Victoria and sister to the Tsarina. Charles Bergamasco, was the most favoured photographer among European society aristocrats during the 1860’s to 1880’s and based in St. Petersburg.
