HOMER (?8th century B.C.). Opera, in Greek. Florence: heirs of Filippo Giunta, 1519. 2 volumes, 8º (150 x 87mm). Woodcut device on titles and last pages. (Last leaf with device in vol. I slightly defective and cut out and mounted, first and last leaves in both vols rather stained and spotted.) Late 18th-century English red morocco, compartments of spine ruled in gilt, single gilt fillet round sides, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: Thomas Dampier (1749-1812, bishop of Ely and book collector; armorial bookplate) – William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (Chatsworth library label).
THOMAS DAMPIER'S COPY. Dibdin described Dampier as 'the most learned of his generation of book collectors... the personal library which he began to collect as a student became by the time of his death one of the most celebrated of its time' (ODNB). The library was sold en bloc to William Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire. This edition was based largely on the second Aldine edition of 1517. Adams H-743; Hoffmann II, p.815.
