VASE COUVERT EN BRONZE INCRUSTE D'OR, YOU
CHINE, DYNASTIE QING, FIN DU XVIIIEME SIECLE
De forme poire, il repose sur un pied légèrement évasé. La panse est ornée de masques de taotie sur fond de leiwen. Le col est rehaussé de dragons stylisés, placés de part et d'autre d'un masque d'animal. L'anse est ciselée en forme de corde tressée et rattachée à l'épaulement par deux masques de tapir. Le couvercle bombé reprend ces motifs archaïsants. Le décor est ponctué d'arêtes crénelées. L'intérieur du couvercle et celui du vase portent une inscription archaïsante à neuf caractères.

Lot Essay

The revival in archaic bronze shapes and decoration reproduced in different materials reached its apogee during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. Our current example is a great imitation of the stout oval-bodied you, an important wine vessel for religious rituals in the late Shang Dynasty. A you with extremely similar patterns excavated in Hunan Ningxiang is illustrated in Robert W.Bageley's Shang Ritual Bronzes: v.1: Ancient Chinese Bronzes in the Arthur M.Sackler Collections, Harvard University Press, 1987, p. 375, fig.64.2.
