A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER PENTAFOIL BOX AND COVER
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of five-petalled, prunus-blossom form, the cover is carved with scholars at leisure, enjoying the tranquil landscape on a boat and in a lakeside pavilion set amidst trees and rocky mountains. The sides of the cover and box are decorated with five evenly spaced floral-sprays each set within an oblong cartouche all against a diamond diaper ground. The interior and base are applied with black lacquer.
