A RARE CARVED JADE CUP
MING DYNASTY, EARLY 17TH CENTURY
The cup is elaborately carved in openwork on the exterior in high relief to depict Wang Xizhi accompanied by an attendant, goose and a deer. The vessel is further decorated with a crane and a stylised Shou character, all set within a landscape formed by pine trees and prunus which are highlighted by russet inclusions.

Lot Essay

Wang Xizhi (303-361), the legendary artist credited with his unusual style of running script calligraphy, was believed to have been inspired by long and sinuous neck of a goose. The depiction of Wang Xizhi and his goose was a popular depiction in works of the late Ming dynasty.
