A RARE DATED SILVER AND GOLD-INLAID BRONZE CENSER
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY, DATED XUANHE FIFTH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1123
The rectangular censer is cast with fin-like flanges on four corners, standing on four columnar feet, decorated on the exterior with gold and silver inlays. The four sides of the body are each adorned with a barbed hexafoil cartouche against a floret diaper ground. The cartouches on the wider sides each encloses a ferocious scaly dragon emerging from cresting waves, while the cartouches on the narrower sides each depict a phoenix in flight above rolling waves. Each leg is picked out with a cicada in gold and silver. The base is inscribed with the characters Da Song Xuanhe wunian sanyue zao, 'Made in the third lunar month in the fifth year of the Xuanhe reign of the Great Song'.
