ALCIATUS, Andreas (1492-1550). Emblematum libellus. Edited by Bernardo Pietro Rhosithino. Venice: Aldus Manutius, June 1546.

8° (153 x 102mm). Italic type. Aldine device on title repeated on F, 84 woodcut devices. (Two leaves with faint ink marks.) 19th-century red morocco, sides centred with Aldine device in gilt, gilt border, flat spine lettered directly within a ruled border, gilt edges (light sunfading). Provenance: Albertus Leolius (title signature, washed) -- Agamenone Mainard (title signature) -- [H. Yates Thompson] -- S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

YATES THOMPSON COPY OF THE ALDINE EDITION, THE FIRST ITALIAN EDITION OF ALCIATUS AND THE FIRST EMBLEM BOOK PRINTED IN ITALY. It constituted a second volume of emblems, 86 in number, which were entirely new, 'the result of various hours of leisure since 1834, the date of Wechel's edition of the first volume' (Green p. 19). The 84 devices make this the most extensively illustrated work to come from the Aldine press since the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili printed almost half a century earlier. They include the beautiful group of the Graces after Raphael, and are both larger and different in style to Wechel's earlier blocks. As Mortimer notes, they were 'quickly absorbed into the editions currently printed in France, the Venice blocks freely copied by Pierre Eskrich for Lyons editions by Macé Bonhomme and Guillaume Rouillé'. Green's collation copy. Adams A-602; Ahmanson-Murphy 314; Brunet I:147; Green 28: 'a very rare book'; Essling p. 673; Landwehr Romanic 33; Mortimer Italian 14; Praz p. 249; Renouard p.138; Sander I, 224.
