4° (174 x 134mm). Title with engraved emblem, 74 full-page copperplate emblems by G. de Jode. (Lacks final leaf, rather waterstained, some light soiling.) Mottled calf gilt by Roger de Coverly, preserving the arms of the Bibliothèque de St. Ange from the earlier binding on sides. Provenance: Bibliothèque de St. Ange (binding and bookplate) --'Secousse 48P' (insciption on title) -- S.A. Thompson Yates (1894 bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of this French translation. The Latin text first appeared at Antwerp in 1579. Each emblem bears a letter, and carries a French caption and bible quotation, with a poem in French on the opposite page. The book is based on the theme 'Cognoy Toy Mesme': the illustrations, mottoes and poems are elaborations on this subject, and the examples are mostly derived from classical mythology and philosophy.
