LA PERRIERE, Guillaume de (1499-1565). La Morosophie ... contenant cent emblemes moraux, illustrez de cents tetrastiques Latins, reduitz en autant de quatrains françoys. Lyons: Macé Bonhomme [for Jean Mounier and Jean Perrin], 1553.
8° (156 x 97mm). Title with historiated woodcut border, woodcut portrait of the author, 100 numbered cuts with borders of grotesques and scrollwork, some signed with monograms I.M. and I.P., thought to be the booksellers Jean Mounier and Jean Perrin. Text leaves within typographical borders. (Lightly washed, title short and a little frayed at lower margin, blue colouring to nos. 90 & 91, without final blank.) Brown morocco gilt by Cape tooled in gilt and blind, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: 'Sir W. Tate's sale' (inscription on front blank; his library sold 19 April 1839) --S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. Summarised by Vinet as 'Encadrements variés, vignettes dans le style lyonnais, bien dessinés, mais dont la gravure laisse à désirer.' The text pages facing the blocks each contain a Latin Testrastichon and French epigram. La Perriere's Considerations des quatre mondes (Lyons 1552), also printed by Bonhomme, had used the same portrait and text borders. Adams L-172; Brunet III, 830; Landwehr Romanic, 454; Praz p. 395; Vinet 841; cf. Mortimer/Harvard French 339.
