4° (209 x 145 mm). Engraved title within typographical border, dedicatory plate of the Madonna and Child in a landscape and 81 emblematic engravings. (Emblem 39 with clean tear at plate edge, some occasional browning and soiling heavier on title.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (lightly soiled, a tiny wormhole to spine and tail of spine with small chip). Provenance: [H. Yates Thompson] -- A.H. Bright (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, YATES THOMPSON - BRIGHT COPY. The engraved title and 26 of the emblems were engraved by Giovanni Battista Coriolano (c.1587-1649), a pupil of G. L. Valesio. The dedicatory plate and 52 of the emblems are the work of Oliviero Gatti, also a disciple of Valesio. The remaining plates were engraved by Agostino Parisini after designs by Florio Maccio, a pupil of Lodovico Carracci. The subjects are original, varied and often show aspects of contemporary life. Cicognara 1913; Landwehr Romanic, 496; Praz, pp. 101-102.
