PASSE, Crispin de (1564-1637), Tronus Cupidinis sive Emblemata Amatoria. [N.p.: n.p., c.1618.]

Oblong 16° (74 x 94mm). Engraved title, 52 engraved emblems and one other plate by de Passe the Elder. Late 19th-century blue morocco gilt, covers with roll-tool border of a pelican amid sprays of flowers, gilt spine in compartments, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: ''Memor fui dierum antiquorum PS. CXLII' (legend on morocco ex libris) -- late 19th-century bibliographical note on front endpaper -- A.H. Bright (bookplate).

THE UNLICENSED FIRST EDITION, its rarity being brought about by the refusal of the States General to grant a license to Crispijn de Passe on 7th December 1617. Nevertheless, the engraver proceeded with the publication of Tronus cupidinis (without the 'h') and with a false privilege. Praz considers it to be 'amongst the most charming books of love emblems because of its format and the morbidezza of its illustrations'. Twenty-three of the fifty-two emblems are derived from Vaenius's Amorum emblemata, in most cases with the same mottoes and the same Latin and French verses. The one remarkable innovation is that, apart from Love, the human figures wear contemporary costumes as opposed to classical drapery. Landwehr Low Countries, 796; Praz pp. 117-122 and 446.
