8° (176 x 108mm.). Engraved frontispiece, title vignette, portrait of Nicolaas Witsen and 60 full-page engraved illustrations by Schoonebeek. (Light waterstaining to bottom margin of first few leaves.) Contemporary calf gilt by Boyet, title label on spine, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: [H. Yates Thompson] -- S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. A FINE COPY WITH STRONG IMPRESSIONS of the mythological and historical subjects. Schoonebeeck, the illustrator and publisher, was a pupil and follower of Romeyn de Hoogh. Hollstein XXVI, p. 39; Praz p. 498: 'wrongly described as an emblem book in the Thompson Yates catalogue'.
