4° (195 x 154 mm). Engraved title, engraved portrait of the author, 74 engraved emblematic illustrations by Crispin de Passe the younger. (Light soiling and waterstaining to bottom margins, short tears to title and second leaf.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (some soiling and staining, front cover slightly bowed). Provenance: David Garrick (bookplate) -- [H. Yates Thompson] -- A.H. Bright (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of this well-known emblem book, much concerned with the symbolism of animals. Each emblem has a motto, a quatrain and commentaries. Schoonhoven was the son of Gouda's mayor and governor, Dirk Jocobsz Schoonhoven, a friend of Hugo Grotius. Landwehr Low Countries, 727; Praz, p. 493.
