First published in 1525, this biography of the French military hero, Pierre Terrail, seigneur de Bayard (1474-1524), generally known as the Chevalier de Bayard, was very popular and went through many editions after. Throughout the centuries since Bayard’s death, he has been known as 'le chevalier sans peur et sans reproche' (the knight without fear and beyond reproach). He was known for his bravery and genius as a commander. He served under King Charles VIII, Louis XII and Francis I of France and died in battle on 30 April 1524. Brunet I, 1774: 'cette edition ne porte point de date; mais elle n’est pas antérieure à l’année 1525'.
