3 parts in one, 2° (331 x 220 mm). Large folding engraved plate of the Turkish army, 79 (of 80) full-page engravings in the text. (Lacking title, part 3 lacking F3 containing plate 23, old repair to k3 affecting about a dozen words, very large old repair to the portrait of the Patriarch on l2, plate on E4 defective with large hole in text, F2 with large tear repaired on verso, short tear to L1 without loss, Q4 torn with minor loss, T2 with small marginal hole, V4 torn and defective, occasional light browning, spotting and staining.) 18th-century sheep, covers panelled with gilt border enclosing large central gilt arms, gilt spine, red edges (extremities rubbed, head- and tail caps worn, some minor repairs to joints.) Provenance: Pierre Nicolas Getz (prize presented by Royal Archiepiscopal Bourbon College of Rouen, inserted leaf dated 6 August 1742; binding) -- A.H. Bright (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION THUS, KNOWN FOR ITS ICONOGRAPHY OF THE SULTANS, with Thomas Artus' additions (see C. D. Rouillard, The Turk in French history, thought and literature (1520-1660). Paris: 1938 pp.279-280). Atabey (214), Hamilton (23) and Koç (59) only record the 1662 edition. Due to uncertain collation, this lot is sold not subject to return.
