VALTURIO, Roberto (1405-1475). De re militari libris XII. [Bound with:] RUSIO, Lorenzo (1288-1397). Hippiatria sive marescalia. Paris: Christian Wechel, July 1532.
2 works in one volume, 2° (310 x 205mm). Both with woodcut illustrations throughout. (1: Some light marginalia, a few short marginal tears, a few leaves browned, leaf Aa6 with emblem excised from standard. 2: a few small ink spots on the title, occasional light soiling, one wormhole in the fore margin, small dampstain in the top margin.) Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, one spine compartment lettered in manuscript, brass catches and clasps (some yellowing, a few wormholes, extremities rubbed. Provenance: P.C.F. Papy (small inscription on first title) -- indistinct early inscription on the front endpaper -- H. Bright (bookplate).
Two works published by Wechel, including the first edition of Valturio printed in France, and an early edition of Rusio. The remarkable woodcuts which illustrate the Valturio are 'reversed free copies' (Mortimer) of the blocks used to illustrate the second edition (Verona: Boninus de Boninis, 1483), which were in turn copied from the first edition (Verona: Johannes, 1472). Cockle notes that these illustrations were 'said to be from da Vinci's drawings'. The second work, by Rusio, considers the various ailments or horses and their treatment, the illustrations include three woodcuts of horses by Hans Sebald Beham. 1: Adams V-224; Mortimer Harvard French 535; cf. Cockle 501 (1472 edition, with note on other editions, including this). 2: Adams R-962 (for the 1531 edition).
