SELLER, John (bap.1632-1697). [Anglia contracta. or a description of the kingdom of England & principality of Wales. In several new mapps of all the countyes therein contained. London: John Seller, c.1695].
8° (140 x 92mm). 63 double-page engraved maps of England and Wales, 2 double-page plates 'The Idols of the Ancient Saxons', double-page engraved table 'The Names of ye Bishopricks in England & Wales', 2 double-page plates 'The Seales of Armes of the Bishops of England' by W. Sherwin, double-page plates of 'The Prince of Orange Landing at Torbay' and 'A prospect of the stupendious monument (on Salisbury Plain) called the Stonehenge', additional folding plate by H. Moll 'The Seat of War in Pomerania' with a bird's-eye view of Stralsund, all hand-coloured by a contemporary hand, 58 engraved text-leaves accompanying the maps. (Lacking double-page allegorical title, full-page engraved portrait of William and Mary, 'A draught of the River Thames', maps of Jersey, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk, and without the accompanying text to Cumberland, Derbyshire, Durham, Northumberland and Westmoreland; 12 maps mounted, 2 trimmed just touching image, a few minor repairs, some light soiling and staining affecting about half-a-dozen maps.) Early 20th-century green morocco by Alex. Paterson of Knotty Ash, covers panelled in gilt, gilt spine, decorative endpapers, gilt-turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: A.H. Bright (bookplate).
SCARCE POCKET ATLAS, the only publication (albeit in a reduced form) of Seller's projected folio Atlas Anglicanus. Adverts for the present work first appeared circa 1685, but the earliest surviving copies date between 1688-1693, although Seller's statement of his position as 'Hydrographer to the King' that appears on the title-page suggests publication post-1693. Chubb gives a date of [1695], but does not call for accompanying text to the Welsh counties that appears in the present work; he notes two later editions with maps of Scotland and Ireland which are not present here. Both Skelton and Shirley give a date of [1694?, or earlier], with the BL copy lacking the text for Cumberland, Durham, Northumberland and Westmoreland. Chubb CXVIII; Shirley BL Maps T.SELL-10a; Skelton 115.
