Small 4° (197 x 148mm). Title within wide woodcut historiated border. (Short tear in lower margin of title, offset from title woodcut on F2v, presumably while in sheets.) Brown panelled morocco gilt by Riviere & Son, gilt decorated and lettered spine, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: old manuscript annotations in margins.

Luther’s reply to King Henry VIII’s Assertio septem sacramentorum, for which Henry was merited the title ‘Defensor Fidei’ by Pope Leo X. The feud between Henry VIII and Luther started in 1520 when Luther published his De captivitate Babylonica ecclesiae, in which he railed against the papacy and urged people to accept what he called the ‘new’ Christianity.
