8 ° (176 x 103mm). Woodcut printer's device, foliated initials, red-ruled borders. (Without blank Bb8.) Later 18th-century red morocco [by Roger Payne?], single gilt fillet on sides, spine with raised bands emphasised by dots and gilt rules, two of six compartments directly lettered, turn-ins with single gilt rule, spot-marbled endpapers, gilt edges (upper cover scuffed, slight rubbing to spine). Provenance: Thomas Cholmondeley, 1st Baron Delamere (1767-1855; signature on front blank and record of £1-0-0 cost with his initials) – Reginald Cholmondeley, Condover Hall (bookplate). First edition by Justus Lipsius. 'The Netherlands scholar, knew the whole of Tacitus by heart, and his great edition, nineteen times reprinted, is one of the monuments of 16th-century scholarship. In a life much vexed by the violence of governments, he found much, as is notes declare, in common with Tacitus’s ironic and cynical records of first-century Rome’ (PMM). Adams calls for a final gathering *8, not present here, nor in the Adams copy itself, nor in the BSB library or Vershbow copies. Adams T-31; PMM 93; Voet 2276.
