2° (285 x 197mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait and engraved title, both by W. Marshall, woodcut headpieces. (Outer margin of 2P4 torn away, repaired but with loss of a few letters of circa 14 lines of text and page number, a few light spots.) Blue panelled morocco gilt by Wallis & Lloyd, spine lettered and decorated gilt in compartments, turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE EXPANDED EDITION, second issue with colophon dated 1640. It was translated from the 1623 enlarged Latin version of Bacon’s 1605 treatise on learning and the organization of human knowledge. Gibson 141b; STC 1167.3
